Do you Live to Work or Work to Live?

There are definitely two types of people (at least) in this regard. Some people just love to work and their job is their priority. They enjoy doing it and look forward to it. Others merely go through the motions to get the paycheck. Their interests lie elsewhere if they have any.

They may be more involved with hobbies or avocations, or maybe they are struggling artists. Pretty common to hear the expression ‘starving artists’ and that’s because for some reason they usually have many years of creating art that doesn’t earn them enough money to live. Many times they have no sense of business so they mismanage everything. This is really sad but something about the struggle must contribute to developing their talent.

Whether we live to work or work to live , the difference may depend a lot on whether you are fortunate enough to have a job where you are doing what you love to do or not.

Everybody knows some times it is necessary to do whatever we can to support ourselves – ‘any port in a storm’ and it may not be our ‘cup of tea’. This is okay for a limited time but if it becomes a career it can become a real psychological drain on someone; like an ‘uphill battle’.

After all, besides sleeping, our work takes up a huge proportion of our life. When measured in time, we should really try to be happy with what we are doing – or even are forced to be doing. It is really an art that takes some strength of character to remain positive even in a negative situation. If we are in a situation where we are not really being stimulated mentally or some other issue like not enough money or even ugly politics are making us unhappy, we need to try to change it.

In this day and age we can’t just throw away a job, because the days where we knew ‘when one door closes another one opens’ is not necessarily so. We are fortunate if we have a way to support ourselves on any decent level. The thing is if we really want more, then we have to believe that we can have more and then we have to do something about it.

Obviously if we love to work it will be a lot easier if we have to start a business on the side to supplement our income, or even perhaps to start mapping out a plan of escape from our rut. Working at home to build a business is one way you can get creative and develop something you like doing.

Just the feeling of taking control of your life (especially if you have felt trapped) can be liberating and give you a real new ‘breath of fresh air’. We all must work to live but obviously if we are going to have more than one job to make a big change, we will need to be one who lives to work. If it doesn’t come natural for you, you will need to psyche yourself up to make it seem so.

Components for Building a Business

Some might say that the ‘idea’ for the business would be the most important thing. They may include not only an idea for a product or service but also the entire concept – the look and feel (environment) etc. The way you present everything – your website, your advertising and marketing design is important in attracting people. Your customer service attitude is what will keep them.

Certainly it would be important to know if there is a market for what you intend to promote. There is so much logic to the theory that we should not choose the product or service and try to find somebody that wants it, but to find out what the market wants and then give it to them. Think about that for a minute. It is a whole different ballgame when they come to you versus you chasing them down and trying to convince them.

Equally as important is how badly you want to have a business – your motivation. It probably should be more than ‘need money’. Ideally you would love doing whatever you have to do to get the money. You would have a passion – (besides the money). Whether that passion is related to the product or service that you are ‘on fire’ about and just can’t wait to share, or to the act of helping others by showing them a way to get what they want or need, passion can really help you get through all that you will need to do to build your business.

In many cases the motivation has to do with dissatisfaction with our lot – we are not making the kind of money we want and/or need, we are not doing something that we like to do, or there are other negative political factors associated with our workplace environment; not to mention if we are about to lose our job, love it or hate it, or have already been terminated. Any of these things can help to motivate you to start to build your own successful business.

Whatever it is, just like anything else ‘what goes around comes around’ – If you put a lot of effort and time into developing your business, you are likely to stick with it and to eventually have a successful business. If you are just half-way impressed with everything and more or less begrudgingly work at it, you may give up (fail) before giving it a fair chance.

You can control this – it is not a situation where you can’t help whether you like it or not. When you are in business for yourself you are in control of everything pretty much. At first you may not have the money or expertise to do everything exactly as you want, so you may have to make some sacrifices for a while. Psychologically having a plan for the future that looks the way you want it to will help you get through the hard times while you are building.

Business Online – What Goes Around Comes Around

We should never be afraid to share – whether it is information or even money. With information, somebody must have given it to you, right? Aren’t you glad they did? What if they had the attitude that if they told you something that you might beat them out of something, and so they better just keep the information hoarded away? Pretty mean.

More than likely somebody taught you what they knew and hoped that maybe they had been instrumental in helping you in your journey to success. It is also likely that if they had been successful themselves that they felt that they needed to ‘give back’ to the universe some of the blessings that they had received. It’ a beautiful way to think, especially when compared to folks that figure ‘I got mine’ (so that is all that matters).

What is really amazing is when someone has been given a real leg up –- tangible resources, training, content, etc., for free – that instead of being grateful for the opportunity, they would begrudge their benefactors from making any money from them even indirectly. It is another example of rampant greed and entitlement. They really worry about if it is possible for anybody else to benefit from their real estate which they wouldn’t even have if someone didn’t share with them in some way.

It’s understandable when in direct competition to try to best your opponent. However it is also possible to have a ‘win/win’ situation where everybody helps everybody to benefit. You have probably seen the slogans ‘we only succeed if you succeed’. Think about that both from the perspective of the giver and the taker (of information, opportunity, etc).

If I am trying to teach you something and you are able to learn, then I succeeded. However if you refuse to learn then I failed. If I share something with you because someone shared it with me, but you don’t pass it on to someone who is coming up behind you or alongside you, then it just dies.

Maybe somebody who would have benefitted from the information will fail because they didn’t know. Will that make you more of a winner? Hardly. That however is the mindset of someone who doesn’t understand that ‘what goes around comes around’.

Whether it is good or bad – we never know when we will get what we have coming to us. It works both ways – the more good we do the more good we receive and the other way around. So be a winner and don’t be afraid to give it up. Share whatever you have gladly and remember to be thankful for all that you have been able to receive and accomplish.
