Work at Home to Supplement Your Income

It sure seems that wages don’t keep up with the cost of living as it soars year after year. Not to mention how it will become more difficult to live on social security and retirement savings as the cost of living continues to rise. So whether you are still working or have retired, the need for more money is an ever-present reality.

Financial Help Needed!

If you are receiving social security earlier than full retirement age, you can still earn money and only beyond a certain amount would it require a deduction in your benefits. If you have reached full retirement age, it won’t be deducted at all. Beyond what you would need to use to supplement your living expenses, etc., you could start saving whatever you don’t need to use.

If you are still working at a day job and just barely scraping by – or at the least have nothing left over to save after your living expenses, then working at home to build another income is a very wise thing to do. Having a second job is a little more tedious in that you are spending a lot of time traveling from home to job one and then from job one to job two. All that commute time is really unpaid labor. It is stressful and dangerous — one commute is bad enough, not to mention so much time away from home.

When you have a home business you can just come home from work and relax, have dinner and visit with your family. Then instead of ‘the boob tube’ you can go to your computer and start working in a relaxed and friendly environment. This is relevant because many times the work environment is not friendly and in fact is hostile, which is more stress.

If you have a business in your home there are certain tax advantages in that you can claim a percentage of your maintenance costs as business expense – whether your home business is full or part-time. For example you can claim some of your rent or mortgage, utilities, equipment, security, communications, etc. Additionally anything directly spent on your business is deductible as well, such as advertising, technical support, etc.

Consult your Federal and State tax websites to get forms and schedules that include instructions on what is a legitimate deduction and how to claim it. Be sure to have documentation for every deduction you take and keep it for at least 7-years in case of an audit. The regulations change so be sure each year to check the rules.

There are a number of things you can do to earn ‘passive’ and residual income more or less on ‘autopilot’ once you have it all set up and running. The easiest thing to do to start a business is to join one or more affiliate programs. This is because they will provide almost everything you need to start earning money if you will just do the work consistently.

Why Affiliate Marketing on the Internet Makes the Perfect Home Business

There are many reasons why affiliate marketing may be the number one way to start a business from home. Just to name a few obvious things, the program will provide you with a web page to use to advertise. There are no technical skills required.

affiliate program

While this is usually not a website where you can change and customize it, it is a lean, mean advertisement with a link address that is ready to use from day one. No wasting time and being in ‘pre-launch’ forever while you are debugging and etc. Having this one major tool is a huge step up that allows you to focus on promoting your business to earn commissions.

While this is a great benefit and ‘leg up’, even more critical is having a product to sell without years of development and market research. With affiliate programs, they may have tangible or digital products you can earn money with and even use for your own business. In addition you can earn money for referring others to the business opportunity.

With both of these issues covered instantly, not only are you saving time, but a huge amount of money in start-up costs that you would otherwise need to spend to develop a business. It is assumed you have a computer and Internet connectivity and this configuration more or less defines your business. Beyond that necessary equipment, your expense as well as effort will be largely focused on advertising and marketing.

It is a fair exchange between the affiliate program and the member. The member receives the right to earn money from the program’s intellectual property and to use various resources that they may provide toward that end. In return the member advertises the business to sell the products and refer others to the company. For the company this means they will spend less in the advertising the affiliates will need to do if they want to earn commissions.

An additional benefit of being in business on the Internet is the cost of doing business. Anything that you can do in the virtual world is 10 times less expensive than doing basically the same operation offline. For example you are reaching millions of people by advertising on the Internet and via email marketing which goes hand-in-hand with any online business. If you were to pay for enough paper, printing and postage to reach even half that many people, it would cost you a small fortune.

It’s just the way the world is that things are easier done with money and although you can do many things to promote your business online absolutely free, it will require less effort and time if you are able to afford some help, for example to build your list of prospects. Of course there is nothing to say that someday you can’t start your own affiliate program and your members will help you advertise your business!

Home Alone? Be Bizzy Working

Looking at being home alone from a few perspectives, with and without a home business, a few things ring true either way. While being home is great and so far superior to commuting, it can get lonely.

WAH-man-laptop

If you do not take regular ‘breathers’ to get out of the house or at the very least to do something besides your business, it can feel depressing and smothering, like “cabin fever”, no matter how much fun you are having with your home business. You need to refresh your browser!

At the same time, and in the same vein, you need to be able to stop working sometimes even though it is midnight and you can’t go outside or go shopping to get away from it. You need to sleep and to rest and relax – If you need to make an appointment to schedule this with yourself, just do it.

Totally on the other hand, if you do stay home a lot anyway, why not do something productive with your home like make it generate money to help with its upkeep and to make it a better living environment for you. Your home, whether you own it or even if you rent an apartment, can be something that it would be very wise to monetize!

US Federal income tax-wise, there are benefits that you can get for running a business in your home. For example you can deduct a percentage of all your housing costs – the space, utilities, equipment, communications, (Internet service, phone, etc). These of course would also include direct business expenses like advertising, technical services, software, etc). There are schedules you file with your regular itemized personal income taxes (form 1040), that are for use of your home for business, *(form 8829) and profit or loss from business (*schedule C); (and of course self-employment tax (*schedule SE).

You can file these for a certain number of years even if you do not make any money or any profit from your home business. However, if after that time you have not made any money then it would be considered a hobby and as such you wouldn’t be able to deduct any business expenses. But hey – why not have a hobby that you can possibly eventually earn a little money with!? Your hobby is money. So point is don’t give up on your home business even if you have to do without all the deductions.

You can also look at your hobby home biz as a learning tool and who knows what you might eventually develop if you keep it real low key; because especially if you work all day or whatever, you may have a problem looking at working again when you get home, working on your ‘days off’, etc. Of course again that is not so much the case if you enjoy working and you love working from home. The problem might be how to stop! ;)
